Domino Sugar Refinery is an iconic building on Brooklyn side of East River, located in front of Manhattan. The 1880s historic building is returning to life in 2023 as a whole renovation is taking place. Thanks to Pau Architects, renovation includes the preservation of the historic masonry wall set all around the perimeter. On the internal side, building will be cladded by a new efficient glazed façade. The upper glazed dome will guarantee a 360° view of the entire surrounding.

MEW was commissioned for structural analysis of the new glazed façade. One of the most exciting challenges was the engineering design and calculation of the glazed dome. Realized by panels with an average area of 20sqmt, dome is entirely covered by DGU glass in order to have the 360° view as clear as possible. Panels are realized by a steel structure and DGU glasses are bent in order to create the curved shape that identifies the Dome. Vertical façade that surrounds the building are typical unitized façade, mostly glazed to have the outside light passing through and light the interior spaces.
